We frequently see the aftermath of items being flushed down toilets that were never designed to be there. Even items marketed as “flushable” can wreak havoc on your drainage system, leading to significant blockages, environmental damage, and costly emergency repairs. At Linken Services, we always advise our customers to treat their toilets as a disposal system for only two things: human waste and toilet paper.

The biggest offenders are wet wipes. Even those labelled “flushable” or “biodegradable” do not break down in water like toilet tissue does. They are made from synthetic fibres that are incredibly strong and essentially water-resistant. When they reach your pipes, they catch on rough patches, joints, or roots, creating a “snag” that begins to trap other debris. Over time, this builds into a solid mass known as a “rag-ball” or “fatberg,” which can completely seal off your pipe.

Cooking fats, oils, and grease (FOG) are the other major enemies of your drains. While pouring warm oil down the sink might seem harmless, it cools rapidly once it hits the cold pipework. This grease then solidifies and sticks to the pipe walls, narrowing the bore and creating a sticky surface that traps hair and small debris. Once the diameter of your pipe is significantly reduced, a blockage is almost inevitable.

Other common culprits include sanitary products, dental floss, cotton buds, and nappies. These items do not degrade and act as anchors for blockages. By strictly adhering to the “Three Ps”—Pee, Poo, and (toilet) Paper—you can significantly extend the lifespan of your drainage system and avoid the disruption of an emergency unblocking service. If you are a business owner or a landlord, educating users on these simple rules is a crucial step in preventing recurring maintenance issues.
